Description

The Robert E. Rumens Marine Firefighting School is back for the 27th year in a row! The course, hosted by The Port of Virginia, is designed to familiarize land-based firefighters and maritime personnel with the appropriate procedures and techniques to meet the challenges of various marine incidents within a port or on an open waterway. The course meets NFPA 1005 standards and is Pro-Board certified.

Course Fees: REGISTRATION IS FREE, COURSE ATTENDANCE IS NOT.

  • Virginia in-state students — $460.00 per student / Out of state/ International students — $560.00 per student

  • All registration fees must be paid in full prior to attendance.

  • Number of Attendees per Agency: The Marine Firefighting School is limited to 100 attendees. To help meet the needs of our marine firefighting community, each agency will be limited to 10 attendees per agency.


Prerequisites:

  • All students must have a government issued photo ID.

  • The course is managed by the Incident Command System (ICS). All participants should be familiar with ICS terminology and principles.

  • Students must be in good physical condition. The course will require participating in live firefighting evolutions, on-site tours of large ocean-going vessels, climbing steep ladders and gangways, working in enclosed spaces and participating in a live exercise while underway on a vessel in open water.

  • Most evolutions will require full turnout gear, SCBA, and Type III PFD. These items will not be provided, you must bring your own gear.


Certification:

Everyone that attends this course will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Pro-board is an accrediting agency; our course is NFPA 1005 Pro-Board certified. For those who attendees who desire Pro-board certification, please follow the instructions below:

In order to receive Pro-board certification for this course, the following pre-requisites must be met: ICS 100, 200, 700, 800, Firefighter I & II, and Hazardous Materials Operations Level.

The required pre-requisite documentation for Virginia reciprocity must be sent in advance (for Commonwealth of Virginia attendees, documentation is not required) and the student must successfully pass the final exam. Upon meeting both these requirements, a Certificate of Completion will be issued that attests the student has met all NFPA 1005 requirements and standards.

Students can then apply for Pro-board Certification directly with the board.

Out of State / International Attendees: Out-of-State and International attendees will be issued a Certificate of Attendance Course Certificate due to the prerequisites required to meet the NFPA 1005 through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP). It will then be the responsibility of the attendee to provide the required documentation to the VDFP to receive a Certificate of Completion and Pro-Board Certification.
